Review: Paper Recordings comes through with the absolute goods; a compilation that many true-school house heads wound dream of, especially to own it on digital formats. This is the Northern Disco Lights compilation, a total treasure chest of Scandinavian house jams that are going for serious amounts of money on the second-hand market. In short, this is your chance to own these beauties and mould them into your sets.
Inside, you'll find timeless tunes from the likes of the great Bjorn Torske, Doc L Junior, and even the dearly missed Erot with the stone-cold classic 'Song For Annie'. But, there's more; Biosphere appears with that inimitable drone flair, and even Todd Terje features proudly, as per usual. An absolutely essential release. Warmly recommended. Review: Acid Pauli and Nico Stojan's label presents the original film score and soundtrack for the new German film 'Once upon a time there was Indian's Land' which is centred around 12 brand new songs by Acid Pauli aka Martin Gretschmann (The Notwist, Console) who plays a central role via his close collaboration with director Ilker Catak.
Gretschmann's music is eclectic and adventurous. From dystopic, carnivalesque moods via moments of high intensity to deep melancholia and fragile atmosphere - boundaries are being teared down. Sometimes psychedelic and far out, sometime focused, catchy with one eye for the dancefloor: but never predictable. The soundtrack is a mixture of his old and new tracks plus music of artists that he works with. Review: Nils Frahm was asked by Victoria director Sebastian Schipper to create a soundtrack of 'silence' for this one-take film, a set of scores which would later go on to receive a nomination for Best Soundtrack at German film awards Deutscher Filmpreis. Photozoom. To say this is an intriguing release is an understatement, and it's opened by the slightly unsettling canter of DJ Koze's edit to his own 'Burn With Me', the piece of music which opens the film.
From here you'll wind your way through compositions, arrangements and melodies played by cellist Anne Muller, violinist Viktor Orri Arnason and Deaf Center guitarist Erik K. Skodvin, and of course there's Nils Frahm. There's also a bonus computer game electro track in Deichkind's 'Happy New Fear' and a second DJ Koze production.
Review: The Knekelhuis imprint is truly becoming a gem in its own right, picking out the quirkiest, most interesting talent out there in the electronic ether; a recent EP from London's EYE, for instance, was enough to make us into firm believers! Here, we have a new album from a new outfit, Violent Quand On Aime, and it feels like another sublime addition to a fast-evolving catalogue of pure quality. The producer's debut LP, ST, is a deep and convoluted blend of analogue electronics that have been processed with a dubwise frame in mind, recalling elements of PLO IN DUB. Hard as nails and ultra-forward-thinking in its execution, this is a power electronics album that should not be ignored! Warmly recommended. Review: The mighty Honest Jon's Records brings in the new year with an exquisite and highly awaited set of long-lost gems from the most obscure Iranian recordings dating back to the beginning of the twentieth century. Much like the gorgeous 'To Scratch Your Heart' release from a few years back, this stunning collection of ethnic music is easily some of the most tasteful compilations you will ever set your ears on.
'Painstakingly restored from 78s at Abbey Road', the music moves from one mystical dimension to another, giving us a detailed snapshot of what was going on back then in cities like Tehran. Trumpets, clarinets, enchanting voices, improvisational strings and a significant swell of nostalgia wrap this winner of a compilation up into what will most likely be one of the most important chronologies of music available today. Review: Rolf Peter Kahl's A Thought Of Ecstasy has been released below-radar, and it's the sort of film that demands appreciation from a particular type of audience; after all, it's been released on Germany's most prolific 'bass' imprint since the early 00's, the formidable Monkeytown Records. Two young talents from the wider 50 Weapons collective, Gajek and Anstam make up the majority of these tunes, delivering leftfield shades of moody electronica through a bass-filtered approach that sits just right with the arguably tenebrous vibe of the movie. Shape-shifting and constantly on the prowl for that extra but of euphoria, their expertise is made doubly effective by the appearance of Moderat on the score, another duo whose love for electronic intricacies leads them to paint a rich and compelling picture of society. The underground lives.
