Many handguns are stamped with the caliber, i.e.,.38 S&W. This indicates the caliber and does not necessarily mean that it is a Smith & Wesson manufactured handgun. Letter of Authenticity (See sample) If you desire an in-depth response we can provide a formal letter of authenticity. There is a fee of $30.00 to cover our research, administrative and postage costs. To order the history of your Smith & Wesson, print this form (requires Adobe Acrobat), fill it out and return it along with a photograph or sketch of your handgun and your check or money order. If you decide to obtain a history letter, please provide a complete description of the firearm that includes all markings, barrel length, finish, single or double action, exposed or concealed hammer and a photograph or outline sketch. If you do not know the exact caliber of the revolver please measure the length of the cylinder and include that with the description.
This will aid in the identification of the handgun. If your revolver is marked with the Model Number it is not necessary to include an outline sketch or photograph. First of all, the number 66153 I don't think is the serial no. The serial no. Should be 2 or 3 letters followed by 3 or 4 numbers. Something like IBI1234.
Smith & Wesson Model 41 Serial Numbers
These were made for many years. We would have to know the serial number before we could estimate what year your example was produced. Serial numbers assigned in chronological order. Hi-Power.40 S&W 2W5. Hi-Power Military. Pistols 1999-Current. MOdel..41 Colt introduced.
The Model 65 was introduced in 1974 and the -1 says it the first series with next change (-2) in 1977. So by that, I assume its a 74, 75 or 76.
By the way, I know very little about hand guns, just caught me doing research on another Smith & Wesson 65-1. Ignore the previous part about the letters in the serial number. I just bought a 65-1 myself, serial number is 1035xxx so obviously the 65-1 did use strictly numbers.
While I'm not sure when mine was manufactured, given the difference in our serial numbers I'd have to guess yours was made in the first year of manufacture - 1974.
