- The larger one is the serial number, and the part after the 'H' letter is the model number. For example, on the photo below this guitar is without doubt a H22 (You can type a model number, with the H, on the search box on top of this page). The first part of the serial number has no precise meaning relative to the date of production.
I recently purchased a Air Line guitar. The person I bought it from said that it is a model from 1960 -1964. When he purchased it he sanded the sides and back down very likely to refinish it. It is solid black sides and back. The spruce top he left alone. When I looked at it I could see it had some indication that it had been low humidity.

No cracks at all. A little bit of tightness around the sound hole that caused a few valley's in the spruce top. I was able to get it for decent price. When I brought it home, I put it in 50% humidity right away. The valley's and the tightness in the spruce top came out after 24 hours. Very little in showing now if any. I want to have the preach reglued, you can slip a little bit 1/8 of paper under the corners at the bottom, and nothing in the middle.
I also thought about having the tuners replaced. It's a great sounding guitar, but doesn't match up to my Seagall SWS MJ. I guess here's a question, and wasting money? Or should I just knew that alone and keep it as a ' beater '.

Jan 27, 2010 We have an airline archtop acoustic guitar that we were told was a 1964 but we cannot find record of any 1964's being sold. On the inside it has a serial number of L1508 and in other parts it says P-5 and N-5 were not sure if this tells us the year and if so I cannot find any airlines matching that serial number.
I be sticking about $150 into it. Does anybody else have any info on the AirLine Gutar? Pretty sure it was Montgomery Ward's guitar brand.Sears was Silvertone.

Prices on guitars I recall from back then in both 'wishbooks' (catalogs) ranged from $18 up to $50, maybe $60. I don't recall if even the fanciest versions got much north of there. (Even if they did, I wouldn't have paid much attention, since that would've been way more than my allowance and lawn mowing money would allow.) Still, those are 50-year-old dollars we're talking about, and we haven't seen photos yet.
No way to make an accurate guess as to likely maker, quality or current worth without some more data. Share some pix and I'll bet the real experts here will come out of the woodwork. As others have said, if you like your new old guitar, that's all that matters. Put enough into it to make it easy to play.then play the tar out of it. Cheers, Dirk.
I knew that it would not be worth very much when I saw the label, bottom center of the labels it says ' Japan '. You're right AirLine was the one that was sold by Ward's, the one that was sold by Sears was called silverTone. The guitars were made by Kay co.

I have no idea what the woods are that it's made out of. Most likely laminated except for the top.
It is a nice sounding guitar. The tuner's are little sloppy. I will be taking it to Hoffman's to get an another opinions. The guys down there have always been honest with me.
I know that it will not be worth very much no matter what I do to it. But I like the sound of it, it's a different style to what I have in my Seagull MJ SWS. It will be something that I can take to a campfire and not have to worry about it. The one thing I like about it is, itis 49 years old. I can imagine, all the songs played on it in that time.

And maybe if I practiced enough maybe I will be able to release some of the tones that are locked inside. I did find one video on youtube of someone playing the same guitar.
I've stepped it down on the strings to take some of the stress off the bridge. I think I will have that glued. I don't know what tuner's I will put on it, but Hoffman's don't sell junk. They're great people. It may not be an old Martin, Taylor or Gibson, but it's my 'old Song Dog' now. Thanks for your information Carl. Here are some photos of the guitar I purchased it as it is.
I will be changing the tuners, and putting on a pick guard. I will give you photos of the tuners I chose (GROVER)), and the pick guard also. Later on I will start a new thread I think I will title it ' 68 plywood beauty ' Because I was told it was made out of ' plywood ' and dated it 1965 to 1968. I take it that that is the truth.
The people at Hoffman know their business. And I respect their opinion and trust their information. It's hard to believe that it sounds really good for plywood. I can't believe I just said that.
